Our studies establish a connection between two isolated observations that 1) statins, taken by millions to lower cholesterol, have antitumor activity and 2) Ras-induced macropinocytosis is important in tumorigenesis. We discover that by depleting GGPP required for pseudopod extension and macropinocytosis, statins selectively kill cells with oncogenic defects by limiting nutrient uptake. https://bit.ly/2wT1ypw
#Colorectal Cancer Risk Following #Bariatric Surgery in a Nationwide Study of French Individuals With Obesity
..The mean (SD) follow-up was 6.2 (2.1) years for patients who underwent adjustable gastric banding, 5.5 (2.1) years for patients who underwent sleeve gastrectomy, and 5.7 (2.2) years for patients who underwent gastric bypass. In total, 13 052 incident colorectal cancers (1.2%) and 63 649 colorectal benign polyps were diagnosed. The rate of colorectal cancer was 0.6%… Continue reading #Colorectal Cancer Risk Following #Bariatric Surgery in a Nationwide Study of French Individuals With Obesity
Blood #pressure in frail older adults: associations with #cardiovascular outcomes and all-cause mortality
Blood pressure (BP) management in frail older people is challenging. An randomised controlled trial of largely non-frail older people found cardiovascular and mortality benefit with systolic (S) BP target <120 mmHg. However, all-cause mortality by attained BP in routine care in frail adults aged above 75 is unclear.. ..Risks of cardiovascular outcomes increased with SBPs… Continue reading Blood #pressure in frail older adults: associations with #cardiovascular outcomes and all-cause mortality
Acute #kidney injury after primary total hip #arthroplasty: a risk multiplier for complication, mortality, and healthcare utilization
To assess whether acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with more complications and higher healthcare utilization in people undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty (THA).. ..Adjusted for age, gender, race, income, underlying diagnosis, medical comorbidity, and the insurance payer, AKI in people who underwent primary THA was associated with significantly higher OR (95% CI) of (1)… Continue reading Acute #kidney injury after primary total hip #arthroplasty: a risk multiplier for complication, mortality, and healthcare utilization
Early- Versus Adult-Onset #Schizophrenia as a Predictor of Response to Neuroscience-Informed Cognitive Training
Developmental stages characterized by greater neural plasticity might be critical periods during which the effects of cognitive training (CT) could theoretically be maximized. However, experiencing a first episode of schizophrenia during childhood or adolescence (ie, early-onset schizophrenia [EOS]) may reduce the brain’s ability to benefit from CT. This study examined the effects of EOS versus… Continue reading Early- Versus Adult-Onset #Schizophrenia as a Predictor of Response to Neuroscience-Informed Cognitive Training
Ethnic influence on #nonalcoholic fatty liver disease prevalence and lack of disease awareness in the United States, 2011–2016
Amongst the study population of 4538 persons, NAFLD prevalence was 32.5%, lowest in non‐Hispanic Blacks (18.0%) and Asians (18.1%), highest amongst Mexican Americans (48.4%). Within the NAFLD group, advanced fibrosis was highest in non‐Hispanic Blacks (28.5%) and lowest amongst non‐Hispanic Asians (2.7%). Of the 1473 (97.5%) NAFLD participants who answered NAFLD awareness question, 90% visited… Continue reading Ethnic influence on #nonalcoholic fatty liver disease prevalence and lack of disease awareness in the United States, 2011–2016
Effectiveness and Safety of #Apixaban Compared With #Rivaroxaban for Patients With Atrial Fibrillation in Routine Practice: A Cohort Study
Apixaban and rivaroxaban are the most commonly prescribed direct oral anticoagulants for adults with atrial fibrillation, but head-to-head data comparing their safety and effectiveness are lacking.. 39 351 patients newly prescribed apixaban were propensity score matched to 39 351 patients newly prescribed rivaroxaban. Mean age was 69 years, 40% of patients were women, and mean… Continue reading Effectiveness and Safety of #Apixaban Compared With #Rivaroxaban for Patients With Atrial Fibrillation in Routine Practice: A Cohort Study
FDA Approves New Treatment for Adults with #Cushing’s Disease
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Isturisa (#osilodrostat) oral tablets for adults with Cushing’s disease who either cannot undergo pituitary gland surgery or have undergone the surgery but still have the disease. Cushing’s disease is a rare disease in which the adrenal glands make too much of the cortisol hormone. Isturisa is the… Continue reading FDA Approves New Treatment for Adults with #Cushing’s Disease
#Dysbiosis-Induced Secondary Bile Acid Deficiency Promotes Intestinal Inflammation
Secondary bile acids (SBAs) are derived from primary bile acids (PBAs) in a process reliant on biosynthetic capabilities possessed by few microbes. To evaluate the role of BAs in intestinal inflammation, we performed metabolomic, microbiome, metagenomic, and transcriptomic profiling of stool from ileal pouches (surgically created resevoirs) in colectomy-treated patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) versus… Continue reading #Dysbiosis-Induced Secondary Bile Acid Deficiency Promotes Intestinal Inflammation
