..There were 11 345 cataract diagnoses and 5440 of cataract surgery during 832 462 and 888 402 person-years of follow-up, respectively. Cumulative occupational radiation exposure was associated with self-reported cataract, but not with cataract surgery, with EAR/104 person-year Gy=94 (95% CI: 47 to 143, p<0.001) and EAR/104 person-year Gy=13 (95% CI: <0 to 57, p=0.551), respectively. There was… Continue reading Occupational #radiation exposure and excess additive risk of #cataract incidence in a cohort of US radiologic technologists

Association Between #Greenness Surrounding Schools and Kindergartens and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Children in China.
..The mean (SD) age of the 59 754 study participants was 10.3 (3.6) years, and 29 494 (49.4%) were girls. A total of 2566 participants (4.3%) had #ADHD symptoms. Greenness levels differed substantially across schools and kindergartens. The normalized difference vegetation index within 500 m of a school or kindergarten ranged from -0.09 to 0.77. Greater… Continue reading Association Between #Greenness Surrounding Schools and Kindergartens and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Children in China.
Birth #month, birth season, and overall and cardiovascular disease #mortality in US women: prospective cohort study
..In fully adjusted multivariable analyses, no significant association was observed between birth month, birth season, and overall mortality. Compared with women born in November, increased cardiovascular disease mortality was observed among those born from March to July (hazard ratio for March, 1.09, 95% confidence interval 0.98 to 1.21; April, 1.12, 1.00 to 1.24; May, 1.08,… Continue reading Birth #month, birth season, and overall and cardiovascular disease #mortality in US women: prospective cohort study
Association of Long-term Ambient #Ozone Exposure With Respiratory Morbidity in #Smokers
..In adjusted analysis, a 5-ppb (parts per billion) increase in ozone concentration was associated with a greater percentage of emphysema (β = 0.94; 95% CI, 0.25-1.64; P = .007) and percentage of air trapping (β = 1.60; 95% CI, 0.16-3.04; P = .03); worse scores for the mMRC Dyspnea Scale (β = 0.10; 95% CI, 0.03-0.17; P = .008), CAT (β = 0.65; 95% CI, 0.05-1.26; P = .04), and SGRQ… Continue reading Association of Long-term Ambient #Ozone Exposure With Respiratory Morbidity in #Smokers
#BPA: have flawed analytical techniques compromised risk assessments?
Experimental and epidemiological studies provide compelling evidence of a causal link between increasing exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (environmental contaminants with the potential to perturb the development and function of the endocrine system) and increases in non-communicable diseases, including most aspects of metabolic syndrome.. ..By virtue of extensive research attention, bisphenol A (BPA) has become the… Continue reading #BPA: have flawed analytical techniques compromised risk assessments?
Precipitation and #Climate Zone Explains the Geographical Disparity in the Invasive #Cancer Incidence Rates in the United States
Environmental factors such as ultraviolet radiation and pollution have been known to influence the incidence rate of cancer. However, these factors do not explain the variation in incidence rates across the United States.. ..Precipitation and climate zone were included in each model along with demographic variables such as annual income, population by gender, race, and… Continue reading Precipitation and #Climate Zone Explains the Geographical Disparity in the Invasive #Cancer Incidence Rates in the United States
#Particulate matter and episodic #memory decline mediated by early neuroanatomic biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease
Evidence suggests exposure to particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm (PM2.5) may increase the risk for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.. ..Long-term PM2.5 exposure was associated with increased Alzheimer’s disease pattern similarity scores, which accounted for 22.6% (95% CI: 1% to 68.9%) and 10.7% (95% CI: 1.0% to 30.3%) of the total adverse PM2.5… Continue reading #Particulate matter and episodic #memory decline mediated by early neuroanatomic biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease
Temperature and #mental health: Evidence from the spectrum of mental health outcomes
This paper characterizes the link between ambient temperatures and a broad set of mental health outcomes. We find that higher temperatures increase emergency department visits for mental illness, suicides, and self-reported days of poor mental health. Specifically, cold temperatures reduce negative mental health outcomes while hot temperatures increase them. Our estimates reveal no evidence of… Continue reading Temperature and #mental health: Evidence from the spectrum of mental health outcomes
Bilateral high-frequency hearing loss is associated with elevated blood #pressure and increased hypertension risk in occupational #noise exposed workers
..bilateral high-frequency hearing loss (BHFHL) Increasing years of occupational noise exposure and BHFHL were significantly associated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure increase (all P<0.001). The lineal trend was only significant in males, with adjusted ORs for hypertension gradually increasing with increasing years of occupational noise exposure (P<0.001). Furthermore, subjects having mild and high BHFHL… Continue reading Bilateral high-frequency hearing loss is associated with elevated blood #pressure and increased hypertension risk in occupational #noise exposed workers
